Visual inquiry at VSRS takes many forms, including studio-based projects that explore fundamental visual principles of image-making and representation. From pre-numeric counting systems like prehistoric tally sticks to AI-driven data visualizations, visual representations often play a key role in the ways we understand how our lived experiences are made computational and digitally legible.
These studies, conducted over decades of artistic practice, build on the idea that building and encountering visual encoding systems, even those that are imperfect or confusing, is an essential part of human sensemaking. This work involves intentional physical and material mark-making.
